Tales of giant squid have been common among mariners since ancient times and are the source of many sea monster legends, including the kraken. These elusive deep sea giants, which can grow to be 43ft long, live 1,300-3,000ft below, making their existence widely disbelieved for centuries. By the turn of the 21st century, the giant squid remained one of the few megafauna to have never been photographed alive. A live larval giant squid was finally captured on film in 2001 and a live mature giant squid was photographed the following year.
